SOUTH BRONX CANTASTORIA

People's Climate March
Bronx, NY | September 2014

AgitArte and Papel Machete worked in partnership with South Bronx Unite to generate a Cantastoria theater piece focused on the campaign against Fresh Direct and their plan to have over 1,000 diesel trucks driving through the South Bronx daily in a community with serious pollution and one of the worse asthma rates in the country. This workshop was part of the Climate Arts projects happening throughout the city with frontline communities.

We facilitated a month long popular theater workshop where we developed the cantastoria based on the experiences of the members of the community in relation to their health and their commitment to the neighborhood’s development for and by the people who live there. We collectively decided to build a large truck that resembles the famous Fresh Direct trucks seen throughout the city. On the truck we painted the images used to tell the story and the truck was present in the Climate March, and we performed the play on the streets after the March. South Bronx Unite then used the material for protests and actions against Fresh Direct.
